Journal Entry Week 4

The project I will be working on is Ionocraft (lifter). It is a machine that can wary in size form just a couple of centimeters across, all the way to a full meter and above. They have no moving parts and work by creating a stream of ionized air (thus the name). The effect it uses is called the Biefeild-Brown effect that is essentially a proses in which the air particles get charged, and transfer their kinetic energy to surrounding ones, thus creating a stream of ionic wind.
The machine does not have much commercial use, as it has to be very light in order to be able to lift off, and requires too much energy to be useful. The only way to make it somewhat of a useful machine is to make it large, which brings us to the other problem, which is the fact that as it has to be light many materials used are very fragile. Thus even though an ionocraft is a fun thing to play with, it does not have much practical use except maybe for being an over glorified fan.
